How to Show Custom Fields & Other Features in WordPress 3.1

  • SumoMe

If you’ve been using WordPress long before the release of version 3.1, you must have been surprised and pleased of the new layout of its administration panel, particularly with the Add New Post page (and Edit Post page as well). They removed the features that are used only by advanced users of WordPress like Custom Fields, Excerpt, Trackbacks and others.

Personally, I like what they’ve done because they hid all the complexities of WordPress and made it friendlier to its newer users and it made the layout less cluttered as a whole. However there comes a time when you need to use one of these hidden features but don’t know where to find them. I had the same problem then when I needed to use the custom fields in my layout.

Screen Options Tab

Apparently the visibility options of these features are all huddled up in the Screen Options. It is the little tab that you will see atop the Add New Post page, beside the Help tab at the upper right side. A panel will expand that reveals other post features such as Custom Fields. If you have plugins that add boxes for additional options for creating posts,  it will also appear in this panel. All in One SEO Pack for example is visible by default.

Simply check the box of the corresponding feature that you want to use and it will appear right about below the text editor, ready to use.

Cool huh? 😀
