The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a large, flightless bird native to Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean. Standing about 3 feet tall and weighing up to 40 pounds, it had a stout body, small wings, and strong yellow legs. Its plumage was likely a mix of grey and brown, with a tuft of curly feathers on its rear and a large, hooked beak—perfect for cracking fruit. Despite its bulky appearance, the dodo was well-adapted to its predator-free island home.
Sadly, the arrival of humans and invasive animals in the 1600s led to its rapid extinction. The dodo’s trusting nature and slow movement made it easy prey, and by 1681, it was gone. Today, it’s a symbol of human-induced extinction and ecological fragility.
