A towering, winged reptile from the Late Cretaceous, the Quetzalcoatlus soared above ancient landscapes with a wingspan stretching up to 11 meters (36 feet)—longer than a school bus. Named after the Aztec feathered serpent god Quetzalcóatl, this pterosaur had a long, toothless beak, a slender neck, and lightweight, hollow bones built for flight. Its leathery wings and stork-like gait made it a master of both air and land, likely stalking small prey across open plains. With its dramatic silhouette and prehistoric mystique, it remains the largest known flying animal in Earth’s history.
